Lewis Payne, one of the conspirators in the plot to kill Abraham Lincoln, is the subject of this 1865 wet collodion glass negative, made at the Washington Navy Yard in the District of Columbia. The caption on the negative sleeve identifies him as the man who attacked Secretary of State William H. Seward on the night of Lincoln's assassination. The photograph was taken by David B. Woodbury, a Washington photographer who died in 1866. Payne's portrait was made while he was held at the Navy Yard, where he and other conspirators were kept in the weeks before their military trial that summer.
