The Great Falls of the Potomac, where the river drops sharply over bedrock some fifteen miles upstream from the capital, is the particular subject of this 1862 view. It was made as a wet collodion glass negative by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who worked in Washington during the war and died in 1866. Wartime Washington was crowded with troops, supply lines and fortifications, and scenic spots near the city drew both soldiers and civilians, so a picture like this shows the landscape that surrounded the capital while the conflict ran close by. The glass negative format of the period captured fine rock detail, which is worth noticing in the broken river channel.
