Surgeon George Bayles is named on this glass negative as a member of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery, a unit raised during the Civil War. The record dates the negative to 1860, before the conflict began, so the regimental title was likely added later from the sleeve, and the sitter's connection to the unit deserves a closer look. The negative was made with the wet collodion process, which dominated photography in the 1850s and 1860s and required photographers to coat and expose plates while the emulsion was still wet. It was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer active in the period who died in 1866. The glass plate survives as part of a larger Civil War negative collection at the Library of Congress.
