Fort Monroe, the masonry fort at Old Point Comfort on Virginia's Chesapeake coast, stayed in Union hands for the entire Civil War and was never captured. This glass negative shows men of the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, also called the 152nd Volunteers, at the post in December 1864, according to the caption on its original sleeve. Heavy artillery regiments like this one manned the fixed coastal guns and garrisons, so their work was steady but far from the battle lines. The plate was once credited to photographer Alexander Gardner, an attribution the record now treats as uncertain.
