Officers of the 3d Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery posed at Fort Monroe, the granite stronghold at Old Point Comfort, Virginia, which stayed in Union hands for the entire Civil War. Its position at the mouth of Hampton Roads made it a key base for blockading Confederate ports and for the Union campaigns on the Virginia peninsula. Heavy artillery regiments like this one manned the fort's massive guns and garrison works rather than marching in the field, so portraits of their officers show a different side of the war. The image was made in 1864 by David B. Woodbury, using a wet collodion glass negative, a process that demanded quick exposures and careful handling.
