The three officers of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery posed at Fort Brady, Virginia, in 1864, and the image survives as a glass stereograph, a pair of nearly identical views meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Heavy artillery regiments like this one manned the large fixed guns of the fortifications that ringed Washington during the war, so the setting says as much about the defense of the capital as the men do. Stereographs were a popular home entertainment in the 1860s, and their wet collodion glass negatives capture fine detail in uniforms and equipment.
