Belle Plain, a Potomac River landing in Virginia, served as a major supply depot for the Army of the Potomac in 1864, and this stereograph records an encampment there dated May 16 of that year. The caption names the 2nd New York and 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, regiments that were fighting as infantry during Grant's spring campaign. The glass negative uses the wet collodion process, and although Alexander Gardner was once credited as its photographer, that attribution has since been set aside.
