Belle Plain Landing was a Union supply depot on the Potomac River in Stafford County, Virginia, and this distant view shows it during the 1864 campaigns, when the Army of the Potomac relied on it heavily. The caption notes a mail wagon from the U.S. 2nd Corps, a reminder of how much the landing depended on steady deliveries of letters, rations and supplies. Photographer James F. Gibson made the image as two glass plates, one for each eye, so it could be viewed as a stereograph in three dimensions. Wet collodion plates had to be coated and exposed before they dried, so each shot required careful preparation on site.
