Westover Landing, a Union landing on the James River in eastern Virginia, is the setting for this August 1862 group portrait of Colonel James H. Childs and the staff of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The landing lay near Harrison's Landing, where the Army of the Potomac regrouped after the Peninsula Campaign stalled that summer, so the scene captures a pause in McClellan's effort to take Richmond. Alexander Gardner made the wet collodion glass negatives, and E. & H.T. Anthony published them as a stereograph, a pair of images meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect.
