Westover Landing sits on the James River in Charles City County, Virginia, and in 1862 it served as a Union landing point during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, when the Army of the Potomac moved supplies and troops up the river toward Richmond. This glass negative shows William W. Averell of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry with members of his staff, including officers named in the record as W. H. Brown, H. H. King, and Philip Pollard. Wet collodion plates like this one required the photographer to coat and expose the glass quickly, so surviving images from the campaign are a useful record of how mounted officers presented themselves in the field.
