The sitter is identified as Corporal Nailer of the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry, a unit that gives this portrait a more specific story than many soldier photographs. The record dates it to 1860, but the regiment was not organized until 1862, so that date is likely a cataloging error. The original is a tintype, a one-of-a-kind image on a thin iron plate that soldiers often carried or sent home to family. The Library of Congress made this copy in 1961 from an example in the Bell I. Wiley collection at Emory University, and the photographer is listed as James F. Gibson, who worked in the circle of Mathew Brady's studio.
