Private Levi Miller of an Ohio regiment sits for this portrait, which survives as a 1961 copy of an original tintype. Tintypes were cheap and popular during the war, and soldiers often had them made to send home or carry as keepsakes. The record dates the sitting to 1860, a year before the war began, so Miller may have been photographed before he enlisted, or the date may be approximate. The photographer is listed as James F. Gibson, who was active in the Civil War era, and the picture is held in the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection.
