A young private, George Henry Graffam of Company B, 30th Maine Infantry, sits for this portrait at eighteen. The record dates it to 1860, a year before the war began, so he may have had it made before he enlisted, though that date deserves checking against his service records. The original is a tintype, a cheap, direct positive on iron plate that was popular with soldiers and their families. The Library of Congress copied it in 1961 from an original held by Miss Josephine Cobb, and the photographer is listed as James F. Gibson, born 1828.
