What sets this portrait apart is the note on its negative sleeve, which describes Enoch Hooper Cook Jr. as one of ten brothers who served in the Confederate army. He is identified as a private in Company H of the 38th Alabama Infantry, and the sleeve also lists him as a sergeant, so the picture may have been made before a promotion. Studio portraits like this were common in 1861, early in the war, when volunteers often sat for a picture before leaving home, and the New York firm E. & H.T. Anthony was a leading publisher of such images. The original was held in Union Springs, Alabama, and the Library of Congress copy was made in 1961 from an unidentified source.
