Frank Wheaton is shown seated, three-quarter length and turned to the left, in an officer's uniform, a pose meant to present him as a serious, composed soldier at the start of the war. The portrait dates from 1861, the first year of the Civil War, when many officers, especially those newly commissioned in volunteer regiments, had portraits made for families and for sale to a public eager for images of the men leading the Union army. It was issued as part of the Civil War Photograph Collection, and the publisher, Taylor & Huntington, was a Washington, D.C., firm that sold such portraits in numbered series.
