Albert G. Jenkins appears here in a 1861 head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the right, a pose that was common for formal studio portraits of the period. He was a Virginia congressman before the Civil War and later served as a Confederate brigadier general, so the picture captures a public man at the moment his allegiances were shifting. The print was made by James F. Gibson, a Washington photographer who worked in the orbit of Mathew Brady's studio and documented political and military figures during the early years of the war.
