Thomas Lanier Clingman, a North Carolina congressman and senator who became a Confederate brigadier general, sits for this 1861 half-length portrait facing left. Clingman had served in the U.S. House and Senate before North Carolina seceded, and he took his Confederate commission that same year. The print was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, the New York firm that sold large numbers of photographs of war figures during the conflict. It is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection.
