Peter Joseph Osterhaus, a German-born officer, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, the kind of studio portrait that circulated widely as the Union army took shape in 1861. Osterhaus had taken part in the failed German revolutions of 1848 and 1849 before emigrating to the United States, and he rose quickly in Missouri's volunteer ranks that year. The portrait was made by James F. Gibson, a photographer who documented many Union figures during the war, and it stands as a record of how commanders presented themselves to the public at the start of the conflict.
