This portrait shows John Newton, a career Army engineer who was pictured in 1860, years before the rank of major general named in its title. The image is a wet collodion glass negative made by James F. Gibson, a Washington photographer born in 1828. Newton went on to command divisions in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War, and after the war he directed the removal of rocks from Hell Gate in New York's East River. The picture belongs to a set of Civil War-era photographs that Hirst D. Milhollen and Donald H. Mugridge compiled, so its title reflects that later record rather than the date of the sitting.
