A bearded, formally posed Silas Casey, shown in an officer's uniform, was photographed in 1860, a year before the Civil War began. The picture was made as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates while they were still wet, and it was published by the New York firm E. & H.T. Anthony, one of the leading suppliers of photographs of military and public figures. Casey went on to command a division in the Union army's Peninsula Campaign in 1862, and his infantry drill manual was widely used during the war. Seen today, the portrait shows a career soldier on the eve of a conflict that would soon make his name more widely known.
