A portrait of James Longstreet, who would later rise to lieutenant general in the Confederate Army, is dated 1860, several months before the Civil War began. In that year he was still a U.S. Army officer, so the sitting captures him before the war turned him into one of the Confederacy's best-known corps commanders. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose the plate while it was still wet. The image was made by James F. Gibson, a photographer active in the period, and it appears in a Library of Congress collection of Civil War photographs.
