Lt. Bartley Pace Bynum held two roles in the Confederate army, serving as both a lieutenant and a chaplain, which sets his portrait apart from the usual soldier's likeness. The Library of Congress made this copy in 1961 from an unidentified original, and the record gives a date of 1860, before the war began in 1861, so the original sitting may predate his wartime service. Confederate chaplains preached, led prayer, and wrote letters for soldiers, work that helped sustain morale in camp.
