George G. Meade, who took command of the Army of the Potomac just days before the fighting at Gettysburg in 1863, sat for this 1865 portrait with members of his staff nearby, as the title notes. The image was made on a glass wet collodion negative, the standard process of the period, which required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate within minutes. By the time it was taken, Meade had led the Union's largest field army through its hardest battles and was nearing the end of the war, which gives the portrait a quiet weight beyond the formal pose.
