A stereograph pair from 1862 shows Gen. George Stoneman and his staff at Fair Oaks, Virginia, a site tied to the Peninsula Campaign. The Union army fought the Battle of Fair Oaks, also called Seven Pines, in late May and early June that year, as it advanced toward Richmond. Photographer James F. Gibson made the two glass negatives, which were printed as left and right halves to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Pictures like this one, taken near active campaign lines, are among the few direct records of the officers who led those operations.
