Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name Celestino and the title's description of him as a Portuguese ship captain. The portrait shows him seated in half-length, turned to the left, a format Mathew Brady's Washington studio used for many wartime sitters. Brady, who had built his reputation on portraits of prominent Americans before the war, went on to document the conflict through portraits and battlefield views. The picture dates to 1865, the year the war ended. Its subject tags list him as Union military personnel, which does not quite match the ship captain title.
