The sitter is named in the record as brevetted Brigadier General Napoleon Bonaparte McLaughlen (1823-1887), though the negative's sleeve reads "McLaughlin," so the spelling is uncertain. The picture is a 1864 glass negative made by the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate before the emulsion dried. Its maker, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866. The portrait belongs to a large group of Civil War-era negatives, and it reflects how officers were photographed for records and keepsakes during the war.
