Manassas Junction in Virginia is the setting here, and the photograph shows the building the record identifies as General P. G. T. Beauregard's headquarters in March 1862. Beauregard, a Confederate commander, had made the junction a major supply point after the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, and by early 1862 Union forces were moving into the area as Confederate troops pulled back toward Centreville and Gordonsville. The image is a wet collodion glass negative made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who documented the war in the field. Its survival offers a direct look at the ground the armies were contesting that spring.
