Taken at Warrenton, Virginia, in September 1863, this stereo view shows Union General Alfred Pleasonton, who commanded the Army of the Potomac's cavalry corps that year and led Union horsemen at the Battle of Brandy Station in June. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, a process used from the early 1850s into the 1880s, which required photographers to coat and expose plates before they dried. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the image, and it survives in the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
