Taken near Bealton, Virginia, in September 1863, this stereograph shows General Marsena R. Patrick posed with his staff. Patrick served as Provost Marshal General of the Army of the Potomac, a post that put him in charge of military police, prisoners, and deserters, so the group reflects the work of his office in the field. The picture was made on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposure and careful handling outdoors. For a time the photograph was credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, but that attribution is no longer accepted.
