A column of cavalry crosses the Chesterfield Bridge over the North Anna River in Virginia, and the caption places a rifle pit in the foreground with enemy works visible in the distance. The catalog dates the negative to 1861, but the North Anna crossings are best known from the Overland Campaign of May 1864, when Union and Confederate forces fought along this line. The image survives as two glass plates forming a stereograph pair, meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. David B. Woodbury is credited as the photographer, and he died in 1866.
