A military bridge spanning the Chickahominy River in Virginia, built by the 15th New York Engineers under Col. Murphy in June 1862, shows the kind of work that kept the Army of the Potomac moving during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. The Chickahominy wound through swampy bottomland east of Richmond, and after heavy rains its crossings were unreliable, so engineers had to build and rebuild spans quickly to carry troops, wagons and supplies between camps on either side. Photographer James F. Gibson recorded the scene as a stereograph, a pair of images meant to be viewed together for depth, and both glass plates of this pair survive. Look closely at the timber framing and the approaches to get a sense of how much labor the crossing required.
