The Chesterfield Bridge over the North Anna River, with a Confederate redoubt visible in the distance, was taken by Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock's 2nd Corps on May 23, 1864. The crossing lay on Grant's route toward Richmond during the Overland Campaign, and the fighting along the river that week slowed the Union advance. The image is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose each plate on site. David B. Woodbury, the photographer credited here, died in 1866.
