The view shows Broadway Landing, Virginia, where a pontoon bridge spanned the Appomattox River in 1861, the first year of the Civil War. Military crossings like this one depended on floating spans that could be assembled quickly, so the scene records how armies moved men and supplies over rivers when permanent bridges were scarce. The picture survives as a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass negatives, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The collection once credited Alexander Gardner, the photographer, with this work, but that attribution has since been questioned.
