This stereograph shows a park of artillery at Broadway Landing on the Appomattox River in Virginia, a Union supply point during the final months of the war. In the spring of 1865, Union forces used river landings like this one to move food, ammunition, and equipment to armies pursuing Robert E. Lee's retreating Confederates toward Appomattox Court House. The picture was made on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that demanded fast work in the field. Its maker is uncertain: the photographer was once thought to be Alexander Gardner, but that attribution has since been questioned.
