Rather than a battlefield or a street, this view shows a mill dam on the Appomattox River in the countryside near Petersburg, Virginia. The river ran past the town during the Siege of Petersburg, which lasted from mid-1864 until Union forces broke the Confederate lines in early April 1865, and the photograph dates from that year. David B. Woodbury, who worked in the area after the fighting, made the image. It was recorded as a stereograph, so its two glass plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to give the dam a sense of depth.
