Unlike many views of Civil War earthworks, this glass stereograph records fortifications in the vicinity of Petersburg, Virginia, a rail hub just south of Richmond. The image dates to 1862, early in the war, when Confederate defenses around the city were still new and took shape on the approaches to the Confederate capital. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the negative with the wet collodion process, which required coating and developing each glass plate on site, so the picture reflects both the landscape and the technical demands of field photography. Because it is a stereograph, the paired views were meant to be seen together through a viewer that gave a sense of depth.
