Confederate earthworks on the outer line at Petersburg, Virginia, form the subject here, the ground the 18th Corps captured on June 15, 1864. That assault opened the Petersburg campaign, Ulysses S. Grant's effort to seize the rail hub that supplied Richmond, and the siege that followed lasted nearly ten months. The picture is a wet collodion glass negative by David B. Woodbury, a photographer active during the war. Its stereograph format was meant to be viewed as a pair, which gave the trenches and parapets a sense of depth.
