A stereograph pair of a damaged garden wall in Petersburg, Virginia, dated April 1865, shows the war's effects on a private residence rather than on the battlefield. Petersburg had endured a siege of roughly nine months before Confederate forces withdrew in early April 1865, and the city was left battered by artillery and months of fighting. The image was made with the wet collodion process on glass, and the two plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional look. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, documented the city in the weeks after its fall.
