Shot in Petersburg, Virginia, in April 1865, this stereograph pair records damaged houses in the city as the long siege was ending. Union forces entered Petersburg in early April after Confederate lines around it broke, and months of fighting had left many buildings scarred. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the image as two slightly offset views that produced a three-dimensional effect in a viewer, a format that brought war scenes into parlors. The wet collodion glass negatives he used demanded quick, careful work in the field.
