Earth-and-timber breastworks built by Confederate troops stretch across the foreground of this stereograph pair, and the two glass plates record the scene from slightly different angles so it could be viewed in three dimensions through a stereoscope. Petersburg was a rail hub south of Richmond that withstood a Union siege from June 1864 until Confederate lines broke in early April 1865, which made its fortifications among the most visible reminders of the campaign. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made the pictures in 1865 using the wet collodion process, and he died the following year.
