Fort Mahone, a Confederate earthwork that Union soldiers nicknamed Fort Damnation, stood on the eastern edge of Petersburg, Virginia, where the siege ground on from the summer of 1864 into the spring of 1865. This stereograph records its breastworks in 1865, after Union forces had taken the position near the end of the siege. Photographer James F. Gibson made the pair of glass negatives with the wet collodion process, and the two views were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope to give the earthworks a sense of depth. The view offers a close look at the defenses that once held the Confederate line around the city.
