The view was taken from the breastworks of Fort Sedgwick, a Union earthwork on the siege lines around Petersburg, Virginia, where soldiers faced Confederate positions for months. Photographer James F. Gibson made it in 1865, near the end of the Petersburg campaign, and it survives as a glass stereograph, one of a pair of images meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Stereographs like this one brought the trench warfare of the siege to home audiences, showing the raw earth, timber, and open ground that defined the fighting around the city.
