Timbered bombproof quarters dug into the earthworks at Fort Sedgwick, outside Petersburg, Virginia, show how soldiers sheltered in 1865. The Union post, named for General John Sedgwick, sat so close to Confederate lines that its garrison nicknamed it "Fort Hell" because of constant artillery and sniper fire. Gibson's stereograph was made during the siege of Petersburg, which had dragged on for months before the city fell in April 1865. Paired views like this one were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, giving the cramped, earthen rooms a sense of depth.
