Fort Mahone, one of the Confederate earthworks around Petersburg, Virginia, is the setting here, and an officer stands at its center on the parapet in April 1865. The record identifies him as Lt. J. B. Krepps of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. Petersburg fell to Union forces in early April 1865 after a long siege, and the photograph was taken as the armies were moving through the ruined defenses. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the image as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical views that a viewer could fuse into one image with a stereoscope to see depth. The wet collodion glass negatives of this kind preserve fine detail of the battered earthworks and the soldiers who occupied them.
