A stereograph pair from Petersburg, Virginia, makes a telegrapher its subject, a working figure that gives this 1861 view a particular focus. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried. Its two halves were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, producing a three-dimensional image. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and the record does not name the operator, so the figure stands for the many people who kept telegraph lines working during the war.
