The picture shows a pontoon bridge at Petersburg, Virginia, a city that was the focus of a long Union siege that ended in the spring of 1865. Pontoon bridges, made of boats or floats linked together, let Union armies cross rivers quickly. This image was made as a stereograph, with two glass plates that form the left and right views. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair gives a sense of depth. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and his wet-collodion negatives are among the many wartime records that show the logistics behind the war.
