Few places on the Petersburg lines were as dangerous as Fort Sedgwick, which Union soldiers nicknamed "Fort Hell" because it sat within close range of Confederate guns during the siege. This stereograph shows the fort's interior in 1865, near the end of the nine-month siege. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the image as two side-by-side glass plates, which viewers placed in a stereoscope to see the scene in depth. The wet collodion process required quick preparation and development, so views like this one are a record of the cramped, earthen-walled ground where soldiers lived under fire.
