Few views from Petersburg, Virginia, take viewers indoors the way this one does, showing the interior of a colonial-era mansion on Bollingbrook Street. Photographer David B. Woodbury made it in 1865, the year the long siege of Petersburg ended and Union forces took the city in early April. The picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of glass negatives meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Woodbury's wet collodion plates record the room in the even, patient light of the period, when exposures could run long.
