The subject here is a single house in Petersburg, Virginia, recorded as a stereograph, a paired image meant to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. The city was a major target during the Civil War. Union forces besieged it for roughly ten months, from mid-1864 until the Confederate lines broke in early April 1865, and photographers working there in 1865 recorded the damage left by the fighting. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made this wet collodion glass negative, and its two plates preserve the scene in the stereo format that was popular in the period.
