Bollingbroke Street in Petersburg, Virginia, is the subject here, photographed in 1865 just after Union forces took the city in early April, ending a siege of nearly ten months. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the picture as a stereograph, with two glass negative plates exposed side by side so that viewers could see the scene in depth through a stereoscope. The wet collodion process he used required each plate to be coated and exposed before it dried, which makes these views of a war-worn Southern city a notable record of its final months.
